About Us: Our Centre
Ling Kwang Youth Centre or just LKYouth as we are now commonly known, is a joint project with Central Singapore CDC. It is a registered charity and a member of National Council of Social Services (NCSS).
In 1998, the then Teck Ghee CCC Chairman, Mr. Kua Hong Pak (JPP, PBM, BBM), initiated the Ling Kwang Youth Centre project in recognition of the need to provide a platform to improve the well being of the less fortunate youths in Teck Ghee.
Teck Ghee Division is part of the Ang Mo Kio GRC and the MP for this Division is Mr. Lee Hsien Loong, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. Over the years, Teck Ghee has been active in providing financial and welfare assistance to the elderly, needy families as well as supporting the educational needs of the young.
In line with the above, Teck Ghee had always been working very closely with the various Voluntary Welfare Organizations (VWOs) to reach out to the residents within the Teck Ghee Division. This has helped to improve the living conditions and welfare of residents in general and especially the needy and elderly.
LKYouth reaches out to the general youth population in Ang Mo Kio GRC district. In particular those at risk of straying into teen gangs or a life of drugs, delinquency and ultimately crime. Children who are still in school but who may not be academically inclined and / or have poor or no parental supervision after school hours.
More often than not, these are usually those from broken or needy dual income homes whose parents are at work till late in the day. And left to fend for themselves for most of the day, they are typically the ones who would stray into at-risk and socially unacceptable behaviour.
We target children in upper primary from Primary 4 to Primary 6 and those from Secondary One to Secondary Four - especially those from the Normal (Technical) Stream.
The Centre serves as a point of contact for them regardless of race, sex, religion or social status. Besides mentoring and free tuition by volunteers from various tertiary institutions, polytechnics, Junior Colleges and churches, adventure activities and social events are organized for them.
Premature school leavers are encouraged to go back to school and would be extended all possible help in re-enrolment. All aimed at keeping them off the streets and prepare them for greater and meaningful roles in society. |
