Ling Kwang Youth Centre or just LKYouth as we are more commonly known, is a joint project with the Central Singapore CDC. We reach out to the general youth population particularly those at-risk, regardless of social status, sex, race or religion. We do casework and counseling for youths and their parents, youth adventure & enrichment activities, free tuition for students from needy homes and an after school drop-in programme.
Police arrested 4,135 youths in 2007, a decrease of 145 compared to the 4,280 that was arrested in the previous year. They accounted for 21% of the total arrested. This is a slight decrease from the 22% registered in 2006, but continues to remain higher than the proportion of youth population in Singapore at 16%.
Similar to past trends, the three most common offences for which youths were arrested remained shoplifting (1,294), other theft (520) and rioting (461).
Despite the drop in youth arrests, the Police noted a rise in incendiary and explosion cases involving the use of sparklers committed by youths for the second year running. There were 43 such cases reported in 2007, compared to 32 in 2006. 57 offenders were arrested for such cases and of these, more than 8 in 10 were youths. – Source of statistics: Singapore Police Force Website.

Our programmes are aimed at keeping the youth off the streets and intervene before they land themselves on the wrong side of the law or fall victims to youth crimes. A parallel objective is to develop their self-awareness and character in preparation for their future roles in society.
The Centre relies on the significant support of the Teck Ghee Grassroots community to help raise funds for its various social programmes. It (the Centre) is currently undergoing a transition to change its name - to one that will allow residents in the Constituency to better identify with it and the work that it is doing. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the transition would be completed by yearend. Ling Kwang Youth Centre will then henceforth be officially known as Teck Ghee Youth Centre.
